Yes, silicone can be used to provide additional sealing at certain joints and connection points around shower seals and sealing profiles. Particularly at the junctions between glass, walls, shower trays or profiles, sanitary silicone can help to prevent water from entering or leaking out.
Which type of silicone is suitable for sealing a shower?
A suitable sanitary-grade silicone should be used for applications in the shower area. It is designed for damp environments, is elastic and adheres to many typical bathroom surfaces. Depending on the desired finish, you can use transparent or white silicone, for example.
Does a new shower seal need to be sealed with silicone as well?
Not every shower seal needs to be fixed or sealed with silicone. Many seal profiles are simply fitted directly onto the edge of the glass and provide a seal thanks to their shape and sealing lip. Silicone is mainly used where additional connection or transition areas need to be permanently sealed.
How long does silicone need to dry before I can have a shower again?
The exact curing time depends on the type of silicone used, the thickness of the joint and the ambient conditions. You should therefore always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the relevant product. The shower should not be used again until the silicone has fully cured.
